The first phase of Linda Austin’ two-year project (Un)Made is a series of solo relay performances. On March 13 & 14, Austin performs a 30-minute score for walking, perceiving, drawing attention to what is perceived, casually animating everyday objects, displaying text as “dance”, moving vigorously and awkwardly, lapsing into stillness and poses, chatting/chanting, and singing. Two performer witnesses are among the audience and one month later perform their own solo versions back to back, which in turn become the basis of two new versions by two artists developed during the following month, and so on. In this way the glory and responsibility of authorship is spread among the performers. The process incorporates how people experience, remember, misremember, transform and embody a performance experience.

(Un)Made is a vehicle for the making, unmaking, transmitting, transforming and distilling of performance material (movement, tasks, objects, text and vocals) and the performative self. At once experiential inquiry and staged performance, the project unfolds in three stages over three years: a pass-along solo for 8-10 performers in 2015; in 2016, a group score for up to 40 trained or untrained performers that can be learned, adapted, practiced, and performed over the course of a week; and, finally, a more fully-designed and staged dance to premiere in 2017 that draws on material and methods generated over the previous 2 versions.
